Herstory

Coming from very humble beginnings and a small inner city in Northwest Indiana, I grew up dreaming of the day that I could earn my own money in order to buy the designer clothes and tennis shoes I so desperately desired. My primary goal as a child was to land a job working at my grandfathers restaurant once I turned 12 and that I did. Once I had a few outfits and a new pair of tennis shoes my next goal became my gold herringbone necklace with a Mickey Mouse charm and then the goals continued to get larger! After two summers of being a cashier, cleaning the restaurant, and miscellaneous yardwork to my friends at school, I had become quite a savvy business person. By the age of 14, I had my sights set on a much bigger career but quickly came to realize that the jobs I wanted would not become available to me until I turned 16. As fate would have it, my grandmother had gotten terminally sick and when I was 14 I was forced to take on more responsibility at the restaurant, my dream would come true much quicker than I had imagined.

Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

Thanks to a stern upbringing whose parents refused to allow their daughter to stay home alone, at 14  I landed my very first management job. My grandfather gave me the responsibility of managing staff and operating his business under his supervision while he focused primarily on his rental properties and moving company. That became my first big realization that good things do arise out of bad situations. I went on to enjoy a four year career as a keyholder with supervisory experience and graduated high school with a wealth of incredible business experience under my belt. I credit my family and many mentors who took me under their wing as an adolscene with a large part of my success.

 College or Career?

Since working hard and earning an income had become such a part of my life, taking a sabbatical to go to college was the only option so I too could be as successful as my grandfather was as a pride business owner. Confused on what career path to take, I decided to major in Marketing. That four year degree led me into a prestigious and well earned Sales position at 23 working for a Fortune 500 company. By this time, I was being mentored by some of the top business leaders in the country. My unwavering faith in my own abilities coupled with a driven passion to succeed, I reinvented the rules and proved to many that attending a Big 10 school and being well connected wasn't the only road to success.
